Moab, Utah, is a destination for those who love canyoneering and climbing. If it’s your first time doing either, or just your first time in the area, here’s what you need to know.
You Don’t Necessarily Need Prior Experience
While Moab’s amazing carved canyons can look intimidating, you often don’t need any prior climbing or repelling experience to see them up close. A local guide can introduce you to the few skills you’ll need to hike these remote canyons.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Moab isn’t exactly a mild-temperature destination. The desert sun and heat can wreak havoc on the body, especially when you’re doing something as challenging as canyoneering and climbing. Make sure to over hydrate versus under hydrate.
Learn the Signs of Bad Weather
It’s not just the sun you have to watch out for, but the rain as well. Learn to look for flooding signs, so that if flooding is a risk, you can get to higher ground faster and leave the canyons. Additionally, brush up on the lightening safety tips we all learn in elementary school.
Don’t Rely on Your Phone
While it’s easy these days for travelers to solely rely on their phones for directions to and from a destination, don’t expect your phone to always have a signal when climbing and canyoneering in Moab. Invest in a map of the area and a GPS unit, so you never get turned around.
