Liberia is arguably one of West Africa’s most breathtaking countries. Beautiful, white sandy beaches fill the shoreline and tropical forests make for a wonderfully diverse landscape. However, getting into the country is not always easy. Strict visa requirements and sketchy situations at the border can put a damper on your travels.
A visa to enter Liberia is alleged to take between three and six weeks to gain approval and arrive. However, it’s not uncommon for the wait to stretch a couple of months or longer. Apply early! When you are approved, there’s still the struggle of providing evidence you’ll leave once you’re in. Travelers are required to show funds equaling at least $10,000 in order to make it past immigration. That’s due to numerous travelers entering the country and refusing to depart. This makes it difficult for backpackers and other budget travelers to visit the country.
If you do manage to prove sufficient funds, there’s also the matter of your point of entry. Crossing the border by land is tricky, as in many third-world countries, as the border agents aren’t against forcing a bribe. If you don’t have a few extra bucks to hand them, they could turn you away. This is why you should always fly into the capital city of Monrovia.
Be sure to study all of the vaccination requirements and suggestions before you go. Liberia is a wonderful country full of endless fun and adventure, but it can also be dangerous if you travel too far off the beaten path.
