Scandinavia, a region in Northern Europe composed primarily of Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and sometimes Finland, is a vast area that poses quite a few problems when it comes to travel. The topography of the region is mountainous and often remote. However, if you plan ahead you’ll find getting around isn’t that big of a deal.
Train
One of the easiest ways to get around Scandinavia is through ScandinavianRail. This train service is open to both locals and tourists, and offers one of the most scenic and comfortable options. It’s also more affordable than driving!
Flight
To this day RyanAir remains the most affordable means of air travel throughout all of Europe. They boast numerous destinations in Sweden alone, and can get you from one city in Scandinavia to another in the fastest time. The only downside is these flights are notoriously uncomfortable. But they are quick, and you get what you pay for!
Rentals
It is possible for American tourists to rent a car in each Scandinavian country, as long as you can provide proof of license and insurance. The roads in these countries tend to be less packed than what we’re used to at home, so you’ll find the trip between cities is quite relaxing. You’ll also have an opportunity to stop at your leisure, opening up more options to explore.
Hitchhiking
Hitchhiking is a contentious subject among travelers due to issues of safety. However, Scandinavia has a reputation for housing some of the friendliest locals in Europe, and hitching a ride here is certainly a viable option to be chosen at your own discretion. The downside is cities and towns can be far apart in the region, so finding someone willing to go the distance can be a chore.
