Hiroshima is one of Japan’s most visited cities, and it’s easy to see why. Here are some of the best attractions in town.
Peace Memorial Park is home to the cenotaph in honor of the victims of the 1945 atomic bomb, as well as many places for reflection on the legacy of the war. You can also find the Flame of Peace, which will be kept alight until every nuclear weapon in the world is destroyed.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is another must-see, telling the story of the bomb and its aftermath. It is known to be an incredibly moving institution with a number of amazing exhibitions.
Take a boat to Miyajima, known as Shrine Island, and you will get a great view back across to Hiroshima. There is a huge shrine that looks like it floats on the water, making for an awesome photo opportunity.
For a nice break from the bustling city, dip into Shukkei-en Garden. Built in 1620, this landscaped garden is a breath of fresh air on the banks of the Ota River.
Another traditional attraction is the Mitaki-dera Temple, built in 809. It is set in spectacular grounds that are particularly beautiful in autumn, when the leaves on the trees turn an array of amazing colors.
