Most travelers think of Iceland’s sun-drenched summer season as the perfect time to visit. Although nightfall is short in summer, it rarely ends during winter months. Iceland’s chilly, dark winters are also a fantastic time to see the land of fire and ice.
Not sure where to start? Here’s how to make the most of Iceland during wintertime.
Get Outdoors
Unless the weather in Iceland is dangerous with gales of winds and blizzard-like conditions, there’s no reason not to get outdoors. Iceland is cold during the winter season, but areas in the United States like Minnesota and Alaska are usually harsher in comparison.
Icelanders are also a resourceful bunch and enjoy hot springs, heated outdoor pools and winter hikes. A little dark and cold won’t keep locals indoors for long.
Take a Tour
Iceland offers tours year-round, even during those dark winter months. Try a Northern Lights tour that takes guests on a nighttime journey to the best spots to see the lights dancing across the sky. Most tours come with the opportunity for a pub dinner and warm drinks for a cozy winter excursion you’ll never forget.
Join the Festivities
Iceland is full of winter celebrations, like the Twelfth Night that brings Icelanders out to celebrate the end of the holiday season with bonfires and fireworks. You can also book a trip toward the end of February and stick around for the outdoor beer festival March 1 to celebrate the anniversary that ended Iceland’s prohibition period.
Wherever you go in Iceland, bundle up and keep an open mind. There’s more to do in this dark, star-filled country during winter than you would probably guess. Don’t miss out on the adventure.
