Beijing, China’s capital city, is home to many landmarks highlighting the city’s role in China’s cultural, economic and historical environment. On your next visit, add these attractions to your list of places to explore.
Beihai Park is China’s oldest Imperial garden. Originally opened in 1150, the park opened to the public in 1925. The garden area also includes palaces, temples and other structures.
Beijing National Stadium
The newest attraction on this list, the stadium was built to host the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The stadium currently hosts a variety of special sporting events. It will also play host for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
This complex in central Beijing was the former Imperial palace from the Ming through Qing dynasties. Today, the Forbidden City houses the Palace Museum, with collections of artwork and artifacts from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
One of the most famous structures in the world, the Great Wall of China was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Spanning more than 12,000 miles, the wall was completed in the 17th century, becoming the world’s largest military structure.
Tiananmen Square
Located in the center of Beijing, the city square is the site of well-known protests in 1989. The student-led pro-democracy protests resulted in a high number of civilian deaths. Though a sensitive, and censored, topic in China, the site of the protests is an important one to see.
