London has a long and rich literary tradition preserved and celebrated with museums, libraries and historic landmarks. Visit the iconic Globe or join a literary pub crawl and visit the taverns famous authors frequented, or visit Poet’s Corner, the resting place of Charles Dickens and Geoffrey Chaucer.

Top 5 / Europe

Have it bad for the Bard? Then pay a visit to one (or all) of these five British sites.

Shakespeare’s Globe

You can start out in London at the historic Globe Theatre. A replica of the original, which burnt down some centuries ago, it’s still a remarkable piece of history that gives you a better understanding of theater in Shakespeare’s day. Book a tour to hear 40 minutes of the site’s history retold by enthusiastic theater lovers.

Stratford-upon-Avon

Shakespeare’s birthplace is a popular attraction. His childhood home is a small cottage outfitted with period furnishings and the garden is equally lovely. You can spot Shakespearean influences throughout all of Stratford.

Anne Hathaway’s House

If you’re already in Stratford, pay a visit to Anne Hathaway’s house, a small Tudor cottage just outside the city within walking distance. The farmhouse is nicely preserved and there are still items within that belonged to the Hathaway family.

The British Library, London

While not exactly a historic site tied to Shakespeare, the British Library does contain some artifacts of interest to any Shakespeare fan. The First Folio is on display at the library; it’s the first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays, published just a few years after his death.

Shakespeare’s Grave

Back in Stratford, visit Holy Trinity Church to see Shakespeare’s final resting place. It’s said the demi-figure of Shakespeare atop the monument in the church is one of only two images of Shakespeare considered definitely accurate. The monument was erected in the ear
