Top 5 / North America

The great outdoors — some go to find inner peace and tranquility, while others go to find zero bars on their cell phone. Whatever your reason for going camping, make sure you are camping in the right place.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

With more than 500 miles of trails, this is a hiker’s paradise. Shenandoah National Park is the perfect blend of fashion and function, allowing campers to hike trails, soak in the picturesque scenery and, of course, camp. With cascading waterfalls and wildlife the only sounds to be heard, this site is a must visit for those interested in having a nice relaxing trip into nature.

Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland

Why not combine a vacation at the beach with camping? Assateague is a barrier island off the coast of Maryland, littered with sandy beaches, forests and coastal bays. This is a great location to camp for young and old. With more than 300 campgrounds to choose from, the only thing to worry about is a wild horse stealing your lunch.

Denali National Park, Alaska

It may be out of the way, but Denali National Park is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and if you were looking to be alone, this is the place to do it. With more than 6 million acres of open land, it might be challenging finding another camper. There is more hiking here than one could ever hope to accomplish, a frosty climate and peace of mind; this location is faultless for those looking for a cooler place to camp.

Yosemite National Park, California

One of the truly beautiful things about Yosemite park is that 95 percent of the location is designated wilderness. Meaning no trains, planes and automobiles for miles, just you, nature and your thoughts. With glaciers to hike, sights to see and geysers to watch, there is no shortage of things to do in this National Park.

Big Bend National Park, Texas

For those looking for more excitement on their trip, Big Bend National Park may be your stop. Kayaking, canoeing and rafting are just a few of the activities made possible by the Rio Grande snaking through the park. Big Bend also has many diverse hiking locations spread across the entirety of the park. Make sure to reserve space, because the three campgrounds within the confines of the national park fill up fast.
