During the time of Advent, Croatia’s lively capital city of Zagreb offers a festive atmosphere to celebrate the holidays. The city’s streets come alive with singing, dancing, food, wine and more. The market was voted most popular Christmas destination two years in a row by more than 100,000 travelers on the European Best Destinations website.

Destinations / Europe

Planning a winter break in Europe? Time your visit to these cities and experience the magic of a Christmas market.

Erfurt, Germany
There are loads of Christmas markets all over Germany, but the medieval town of Erfurt puts on one of the best. There are loads of local products to take home as gifts, a huge Christmas tree and an amazing backdrop provided by the cathedral.

Tallinn, Estonia
The Estonian capital is known to host one of the best Christmas markets in Europe, with visitors charmed by the original medieval buildings, cozy bars and restaurants, and affordable prices.

Strasbourg, France
Sat on the German border, Strasbourg straddles two cultures. Its Christmas market is one of the oldest in Europe, and has been made a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Vienna, Austria
The Austrian capital is a beautiful place to visit any time of year, with its grand historic architecture and laid-back pace. It is also home to a huge array of Christmas markets, which take over squares around the city from mid-November until Christmas.

Prague, Czech Republic
Old Town Square is the place to be at Christmastime in Prague, and its small and homely feel makes it easier to get around than some of the bigger markets in Europe.
