South Korea boasts a uniquely modern culture, focused on innovation and tech, but is also one firmly rooted in its rich dynastic history. The region’s mountain terrain and picturesque coastlines are dotted with impressive palaces, temples and other architectural masterpieces that have long stood the test of time. Here are the top five cities to visit in South Korea.

Seoul

South Korea’s vibrant capital and largest city boasts an assortment of ancient and modern landmarks, with contemporary skyscrapers set alongside historic Buddhist temples and palaces. The city is home to five stunning palaces, open to the public, as well as towering mountains, temples and shrines, beautiful parks, museums and performing arts centers. Visit the futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Gyeongbokgung Palace and the Jogyesa Temple.

Busan

The large port city of Busan is well known for its beautiful beaches, mountains and ancient temples that dot the region. While Haeundae Beach is often crowded, it’s worth a visit for the Sea Life Aquarium and Folk Square, and Gwangalli Beach boasts a vibrant nightlife scene and views of the modern Diamond Bridge.

Incheon

Located to the west of Seoul, Incheon serves as an important historic and economic city for South Korea, boasting diverse travel experiences, from dining in Chinatown and strolling the outdoor markets at Yeonan Pier to visiting the beach-lined islands of Yeongjong and Muui-dong.

Jeju

The capital of Jeju islands, also known as “Island of the Gods,” Jeju is a popular destination for tourists and locals and is a great choice for a honeymoon. Visitors find unique theme parks, the world’s largest lava column, the Manjanggul lava tube and the beautiful Seongsan Lichubong, an island offering stunning views of the sunset. Experience the city’s distinctive culture at different festivals or with a tour through a traditional village.

Gyeongju

Visit the ancient capital of the 1,000-year-old Silla Kingdom, home to a number of heritage sites and impressive architectural gems. Situated on the southeast coast, Gyeongiu is known for its historic remains, such as the 8th-century Bulguksa Temple and the Seokguram Grotto, which houses a towering seated Buddha and offers panoramic views of the sun rising over the Sea of Japan.
