Destinations / Europe

As the temperatures start to decrease, so do many of the crowds that overwhelm major European cities, especially along the Mediterranean coast. Take advantage of lower airfares and fewer tourists, and use the fall season to finally book that trip to these European locales, perfect places for off-season travel.

Italy

The rolling hills of Tuscany shine in the fall season as autumn colors come alive and Chianti grapes become ripe for picking (and tasting) in late September and early October. Book a vineyard tour to explore one of the world’s most picturesque wine regions.

South of France

It’s a lot easier to roam the streets of Nice and St. Tropez without the hordes of tourists who flock there in the summer. Book a daytrip to Èze or Monaco to extend your visit along the Côte d’Azur.

Germany

Before and after the rush of Oktoberfest, southern Germany is still warm enough for hiking, cycling and exploring the Bavarian forests. Stop at small towns for a pint of Bavarian beer while admiring the fall colors and the Alps in the distance.

South of Spain

If you’re not quite ready to leave summer behind, the sun in the south of Spain still shines well into fall. Swim in the Mediterranean one day and hike the Sierra Nevada mountains the next.

Portugal

Atlantic winds may kick up come fall, but the shoulder season is the best time to visit this coastal country where temperatures are still warm enough to go without a jacket.
