Top 5 / North America

Fall is an amazing time to visit Newfoundland and Labrador. Not sure where to start planning your itinerary? Try these five favorites.

Go for a Scenic Hike

The Hike Discovery Trail Network on the Boavista Peninsula of Eastern Newfoundland is a coastal trail system filled with beautiful ocean views, mixed with fall colors and historic communities. Likewise, the East Coast Trail network is 186 miles and connects 32 towns. Spot sea stacks, fjords and lighthouses.

Try the Local Cuisine

Fall harvests in Labrador and Newfoundland include cranberries and partridgeberries, plus plenty of sea bounty, including salt fish, cod and mussels. You might even be able to find some moose on the menu if you go to the right spots.

Attend a Festival

There are three October festivals in St. Johns alone. The St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival is one of the longest-running women’s film festivals in the world. The Festival of Dance takes place each year and is the largest festival of contemporary dance in Canada, east of Quebec. Around Halloween, St. Johns throws its own version of Mardis Gras, hosting the largest costume party in the country.

See a Bit of History

Whatever your historic interests are, you’ll find something to catch your fancy in Newfoundland and Labrador. Visit historic lighthouses, see the archaeological dig near Ferryland or see the UNESCO World Heritage site of L’Anse aux Meadows.

Hit the Water

This region has 29,000 kilometers of coastline and all of it is breathtaking, with beautiful views of fjords and bays. Whether you prefer adrenaline-packed rafting or more low-key kayaking, you’ll find a place to rent your water vessel and get out into the open air.
