Summer and fall are full of fairs. These celebrate states, the time of year, jazz and nationalities. Almost any good reason to go to an empty field and pitch a tent is also an excuse to eat things you might never indulge in otherwise. Specialties, aside, it is true every state has something particular about it, but, let’s face it, if it is gourmet, you can probably get it any time. So let’s focus on the old stand-bys you will never find walking down a city street in January.
Fried Dough
This beautiful creation goes by many names — elephant ears, funnel cakes, stuff. It doesn’t matter! Fry it, cover it in powder sugar and savor the flavor. Places encourage sundaes now, but don’t fall for that. Keep it simple.
BBQ
If you are not a vegetarian and meat is being smoked outdoors, just eat it. Life is short and, depending on your serving size, getting shorter, but just go for it!
Pie
If you find a pie stand at a fair, or you’re at a fair all about pie (go to Pie Town, New Mexico, now), chances are someone who knows what they are doing made it. Eat it.
Corn on the Cob
You can be healthy and there is nothing like some roasted corn covered in butter.
Fresh-Squeezed Lemonade
Most people neglect the beverages at fairs, opting for a Coke, but find a fresh juice stand. Take in the health benefits and counteract the indulgences of the day with a classic beverage.
Now, depending on what state you are in, check out these possibilities.
