Top 5 / North America

While New Orleans is known for its nightlife, culinary scene and historical attractions, the city is also a popular destination for anyone interested in hauntings and ghosts. If you’re a fan of thrills and scares, visit these places on your next trip to New Orleans.

LaLaurie Mansion

Located in the French Quarter, the mansion was once home to Madame LaLaurie, a socialite and murderer. During a house fire in 1834, police discovered a horrific scene in her attic. LaLaurie and her physician husband tortured and mutilated their slaves. She fled and, since then, the house has seen other owners including actor Nicolas Cage. Today, visitors report screams, specters and general unease when approaching the building. You may recognize the mansion from American Horror Story: Coven.

Muriel’s Jackson Square

The restaurant is the former home of Pierre Antoine Lepardi Jourdan. A known gambler, Jourdan committed suicide on the second floor of his home after losing a big bet. His apparition can still be seen wandering the restaurant. Staff even set a table for him each night, complete with a glass of red wine.

The Hotel Provincial

Parts of the hotel were used as a makeshift Confederate hospital during the Civil War. Today, guests and staff report bloodstains appearing and disappearing on bed sheets and apparitions of bloody soldiers walking the halls.

New Orleans Pharmacy Museum

The United States’ first fully licensed pharmacist practiced here before selling it to Dr. Joseph Dupas, who performed unnecessary exploratory surgeries on pregnant slaves. Haunted activity on the site includes books being thrown, items moving on their own and ghostly children playing outside.

St. Louis Cathedral

The iconic church is located in the heart of Jackson Square. Father Antonio de Sedella, a former priest at the cathedral, is buried there and has since been spotted walking the alley next to the building.
