Williamsburg, Va.

While Williamsburg is historic, it is fairly new as it wasn’t until the 20th century that the downtown area was restored. Williamsburg hosts numerous refurbished buildings and you can now walk the same steps our Founding Fathers took. When visiting, you’ll see a living history museum where actors in period costume depict daily Colonial life in streets, stores and restaurants.

Charleston, S.C.

Founded in 1670 by English colonists, Charleston was one of the country’s most prosperous and influential cities in the mid 18th century. The city prospered on its production of rice, indigo and cotton, which continued until the Civil War devastated the city. Walk around The Battery with Fort Sumter in the distance and you’ll catch a glimpse of the former Southern high society.

New Orleans, La.

While many may visit New Orleans to party during Mardi Gras on Bourbon Street, history lovers will take delight in admiring sights like the French Quarter and the St. Louis Cathedral. Some of the most famous historic architecture you see in the unique city is of Spanish pedigree despite its more common association with the French. The buildings in the French Quarter were built during the Spanish occupation. The Garden District has arguably the nation’s best and most concentrated collection of colonial mansions.
