See the history behind one of America’s most iconic vacation destinations.
Start your exploration of Newport’s history with a stop in the Seamen’s Church Institute. Founded in 1919 as a resource to those in the maritime profession, the Institute moved to its current location in 1930, a beautiful three-story Georgian Revival structure. It just this month opened its Discovery Deck, a free, open-to-the-public educational space that exhibits the history of the maritime industry in Newport and Narragansett Bay.
Established in 1799, Fort Adams was one of the first U.S. fortifications. It saw action in the War of 1812 and was rebuilt afterward, becoming the most complex fortification in the Western Hemisphere at that time. It’s additionally one of the largest forts in the United States. Used all the way up through World War II, it’s now a National Historic Landmark.
A picturesque representation of colonial living, this homestead boasts facets dating back to 1730. It housed a number of historic figures who played roles in the Revolutionary War. Now, the homestead displays everyday aspects of colonial living, from the period gardens to the wash house, corn crib and outhouse.
If you’re a baseball fan, this is one site you’ll want to check out. Cardines Field sits on what was once a parcel of land known as “The Basin,” used as a water source for steam locomotives. In the late 1800s, railroad employees cleared up the land for use as a baseball diamond and it’s been in use mostly ever since.
The abundance of extravagant, historical mansions in Newport makes it difficult to choose just one to visit. Many are open throughout the year, with tours of various subject matters and cost.
