Top 5 / Europe

Eastern Europe is often overlooked for larger cities like Paris, London and Amsterdam, but the region is a budget traveler’s goldmine with sights and experiences that won’t stretch the budget. The Czech capital of Prague is typically a good jumping-off point for exploring the country itself, home to secret gems most travelers to Eastern Europe have never heard of, including the following.

Olomouc Moravia

Visiting the former capital of the Morvaia province allows you to leave the crowds of Prague behind. This small center of Baroque architecture is only two hours from Prague by train, but just as rich with culture and nightlife. Start at the Holy Trinity column, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Europe’s largest column.

Kampa Island, Prague

Before branching out from the cosmopolitan capital, spend a lazy afternoon on Kampa Island, on the western side of the Vltava River. Roam the quaint medieval streets with views of the Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and a handful of classic restaurants.

When the cities become too much and there is a need for nature, make your way to Mikulov. Situated on the border with Austria, this hilly town is crowned by a picturesque castle that rests high above the city. Hop on the Mikulov wine trail for a taste of the region’s best vintages.

Punkva Caves

Although these caves are probably more known than other attractions on this list, they still deserve a mention. Boats travel along the Punkva River through the subterranean masterpiece where stalactites and stalagmites create underground art.

Spa Towns

A spot of relaxation warrants a trip north to the triangle of spa towns including Karlovy Vary, Frantiskovy Lazne and Marianske Lazne. With spas that date to the 18th century, the towns also offer opportunities to golf, shop and sit back and enjoy the scenery along the German border.
