Nice has a lot to offer art and history lovers. There are dozens of museums spread throughout the city limits. Have a look at these five next time you’re in town.

Musée Matisse

Henri Matisse is one of France’s most prolific and popular painters, which is why you’ll find an entire museum dedicated to displaying his works. The Musée Matisse is located inside the villa once his home, so not only does it house many of his famous paintings, but also much of the furniture and décor remain from when he dwelled here.

Musée des Beaux-Arts

The Musée des Beaux-Arts houses an impressive array of paintings from the 15th to the 20th centuries, featuring both French and Italian artists. There are also numerous post-Impressionist works to be found. The villa also has something of a prestigious reputation as a frequent target for heists.

Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain

The Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain, or MAMAC, is a terrific museum showcasing the world’s most prominent modern art. Pieces here date from the early 1960s and beyond, featuring the works of Andy Warhol and local artist Niki de Saint Phalle.

Chagall Museum

The Chagall Museum was designed by Marc Chagall himself, and prominently features around 40 of his most well-known works. The true draw is the spacious amphitheater, where many of Chagall’s stained glass windows are on vivid display for concertgoers. Entrance is free for young E.U. citizens, but Americans have to pay a small fee.

Musee National du Sport

The Musee National du Sport is a unique museum highlighting the country’s rich history of sporting events. Inside you’ll find exhibits showcasing France’s Olympic achievements, along with the significance of the Tour de France. It’s located inside of a football stadium, making for a wonderful experience.
