Top 5 / Other

There are precious few structures that can invoke a sense of wonder as proficiently as that of the pyramid. Pyramids are found all over the planet, and make travel to certain locales a true sight to behold. Here are five of the greatest pyramids on the planet.

The Great Pyramid of Khufu

Also known as the Great Pyramid of Giza, this is the most recognizable of the three great pyramids outside Cairo. This pyramid is the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world to still stand in a recognizable way. This pyramid is worth a visit, not only because of its grand size, but also because of the other awesome pyramids in the vicinity.

The Great Pyramid of Cholula

The biggest pyramid in the world is located in Cholula, Puebla, Mexico. The pyramid is so massive that, from a distance, it looks like a natural hill with a church on top. This pyramid is traditionally recognized as dedicated to Quetzalcoatl.

Pyramid of the Sun

The Pyramid of the Sun is part of the city center of the ancient city Teotihuacan. The Pyramid of the Sun is a UNESCO World Heritage site and worth a visit if you find yourself traveling in Mexico.

Tikal

Tikal is less a single pyramid and more an architectural site. Tikal was the capital of the Maya civilization in what is currently Guatemala. The pyramids here are smaller and act as temples for specific purposes. Don’t miss them if you travel in South America.

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is one of the biggest religious sites in the world. It was originally built as a Hindu temple to Vishnu. This site looks less traditional than other pyramids on this list, but its importance in Cambodia and historically makes it worth visiting for religious and history buffs.
