Destinations / North America

It may be partially true that once the sun sets and the clock strikes 5 p.m., most D.C. professionals return to the area suburbs for the night, but a fair amount of workers actually live in D.C. and thus have at their disposal the wonders of the nation’s capital after dark. Here are the top things to do in D.C. after sunset.

Rooftop Happy Hour

Catch sight of the monuments or just the busy streets below at the city’s hottest rooftops, like the W Hotel’s POV rooftop bar downtown, or the Brixton on U Street.

Catch a Show

D.C. has no shortage of performing arts venues that welcome performers and shows from all over the country. Check out what’s playing at the Woolly Mammoth, Studio Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre or Ford’s Theatre.

Live Music

In addition to the performing arts, D.C. hosts tons of musical acts from all around the world at its storied music venues including the Howard Theatre, DAR Constitution Hall, Black Cat, U Street Music Hall and the famous 9:30 Club.

Cheer on Your Favorite Team

From summer nights at Nationals Stadium to cold-weather puck-spotting at Capital One Arena, there’s always a D.C. sports team to follow every season of the year.

Nighttime Stroll on the National Mall

When the tourists are all at dinner, head down to the National Mall for a self-guided tour of the illuminated monuments.
