Many visitors to the Netherlands won’t make it outside the capital, Amsterdam, or perhaps they’ll tack on a trip to Rotterdam. However there is a lot to see outside of those big two cities.
The fourth-largest city in the Netherlands was founded nearly 2,000 years ago by the Romans. These days it is best known for its universities and a strong cultural scene, as well as a beautiful old town.
Haarlem
It might be just 13 miles west of Amsterdam, but Haarlem is worth looking at as a destination in its own right. It might be small, but it’s far less touristy and the traditional buildings make a lovely backdrop for a day or two exploring.
Leiden
Some 26 miles south of Amsterdam, Leiden is another university town. It’s also a great base for visiting the Keukenhof flower garden. Leiden is commonly known as the Museum City for its proliferation of museums, including the National Museum of Antiquities.
The Hague
The third-largest city in the Netherlands sits on the shore of the North Sea, and is the official seat of the Dutch government. There are also lots of foreign embassies as well as the offices of the United Nations and the International Court of Justice, lending the city a cosmopolitan feel.
Delft
Some six miles south of the Hague lies the famously charming town of Delft, famed for its Delftware pottery.
