Sierra Leone is famous for its amazing stretches of sand, and we’ve rounded up the best ones to visit.
The most famous beach in the country is known as River Number 2. A white-sand beach backed by mangroves and forested mountains, it is split by a river flowing into the sea that only adds to its beauty. Be careful of the strong tides, and be aware River Number 2 draws crowds in busy periods.
Less crowded by far are the beaches on the Turtle Islands, a group of eight small islands that remain undeveloped. The water is calm and great for swimming, and you can’t help but be struck by the natural beauty of the surroundings.
Bureh is one of the best surfing beaches in Sierra Leone, and remains quiet apart from Sunday. Waves aren’t guaranteed, so it’s worth checking the conditions before you set out, but it’s a lovely place to hang out for a few hours even if you can’t surf.
If you don’t want to travel too far from Freetown, check out Lumley Beach. It’s not too good for swimmers, but the atmosphere is second to none. Kick back in the sun with some food and drink from one of the beach shacks.

United Continues Its Global Expansion
