Arizona is not the barren desert many people believe it to be. In fact, this diverse state offers some of the snowiest landscapes in the country come winter. Check out these chilly wonderlands where you can satisfy your urge to ski.

The Arizona Snowbowl is a bit of a drive from Phoenix, clocking in at roughly three hours, but it boasts an impressive 777 skiable acres. There are 40 runs to choose from with most designed for intermediate skiers, though there are plenty for beginner and experienced ones, too. The highest lift reaches 11,500 feet.

The Arizona Nordic Village near Flagstaff is a popular spot among cross-country skiers. While it doesn’t boast impressive heights, it does offer miles of snowshoe and cross-country adventure. In an effort to become family-friendly, the resort now offers yurts for camping as well as races throughout the season.

There’s even a spot to ski near Tucson. Mount Lemmon Ski Valley is the southernmost ski resort in the United States. With only one lift and 18 trails, it’s not the most expansive place to hit the powder, but it does offer impressive and exhilarating views right in the heart of the Catalina Mountains.

Finally, there’s Sunrise Ski Park. The resort is located in Greer and has trails spread throughout three mountains — Sunrise Peak, Apache Peak and Cyclone Peak. It offers an impressive 65 runs that cater to both skiers and snowboarders. If you’re not into either, you can also enjoy the resort’s sleigh rides or sledding.
