If you’re planning a trip to Hawai’i soon, don’t limit your experience of the islands to just lying on the beach or taking to the waves. There are a variety of ways to experience Hawai’i on a deeper level. Here’s what the Hawai’i Tourism Authority suggests.

Find a way to give back.

Voluntourism has become more popular in recent years, but if you’ve yet to join in on the trend, now’s your chance. The Mālama Hawai’i initiative connects volunteer organizations and travel partners to provide visitors with easy ways to give back to the destination during their stay. Projects range from coastline cleanups to historical restorations to reforestation projects.

Learn the culture.

Hawai’i is filled with museums and cultural sites worth adding to your itinerary. Pu’uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park and Pu‘ukoholā Heiau National Historic Site are two to visit, both on the island of Hawai’i. The former was historically a spiritual sanctuary, now hosting cultural demonstrations, as well as an annual cultural festival. The latter features a seaside temple.

While it’s easy to stick with all international brands and travel and tour providers while in Hawai’i, don’t overlook the local hotels, shops and restaurants scattered across the state. Getting away from your resort and seeing the small towns and all they have to offer is an easy way to experience Hawai’i beyond the tourist traps.
