While visiting Chile, take some time to explore the country’s burgeoning wine scene. Viñamar Winery is a great place to start. Opened in 2001, the winery is located in Chile’s Casablanca Valley, between Valparaíso and Santiago. The name is an homage to the nearby coastal city of Viña del Mar.
Set on about 680 acres, the winery produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère varieties. The location near the Pacific Ocean allows for prime grape growing conditions. The vineyards are set with a northeastern orientation and a slight incline, allowing for continuous sun exposure and cool sea breezes. The drip-irrigated system allows for grapes to be manually harvested.
Visitors can opt for a tour, tasting or both. Three tastings are available, two different sparkling options and one with white and red wine. Pricing varies by tasting. Guided tours are available Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
In addition to the tasting and tour options, Viñamar is home to a spectacular restaurant, Restaurant Macerado. Sample traditional Chilean cuisine with dishes from the land and sea. Besides á la carte options, three different four-course tasting menus are available, about $49–54. Restaurant Macerado is open during lunch hours.
