Caldo Verde

A great winter warmer, this soup consists of onions, potatoes and kale. Meat eaters will enjoy the smoked pork sausage known as “linguica” that it’s commonly served with.

 

Feijoada Trasmontana

This bean stew uses every part of the pig, as it hails from the days when people couldn’t afford to waste anything. Chow down on the whole lot if you’re feeling adventurous, or ask what certain bits are if you are more of a picky eater.

 

Bacalhau a Bras

This salted cod dish is made with onions and straw-fried potatoes with beaten eggs, usually topped with parsley and black olives. It’s super filling, so if you want a big meal on a budget, this is a great choice.

 

Rojoes a Moda do Minho

This dish consists of chunks of pork loin cooked in pork lard and served with potatoes, as well as roasted chestnuts in some regions. This is a dish that confirms the Portuguese love of pork.

 

Bolinhos de Bacalhau

These cod fritters make for a great starter or bar snack, and you will see them everywhere in Portugal. They are made with shredded cod, potatoes, eggs and parsley, and the best ones will be melted on the inside with a crispy shell. Best washed down with a good cold beer.
