Antarctica might not be on the top of everyone’s bucket list, but the seventh continent has a lot to offer visitors.
The continent’s isolated and savage nature means it is largely uninhabited. There are ways to visit the continent safely, regardless of the lack of a local population.
The most important thing to note is there is no visa requirement to visit the continent, because no country owns the land. However, residents of countries taking part in the Antarctic Treaty’s Protocol on Environment Protection need permission from their government before visiting. This includes residents of the United States. Luckily, this step is often taken care of by tour operators.
Most travel to Antarctica is facilitated by way of cruises. In order to stay safe and get the most out of your visit, stay with the tour operators and make sure to follow all directions.
Aside from following the directions of your tour guides, make sure to dress appropriately for the weather. The most commonly visited portion of the continent, the Antarctic Peninsula, can regularly reach as low as -4 degrees in the winter. Even during the warmest months, the temperature doesn’t go much higher than 32 degrees.
Antarctica is home to a trove of animals and beautiful vistas. Make sure to stay safe so you can enjoy it for the entirety of your stay.
