There are dozens of memorable hikes in Alberta. During the winter season, trails glisten in white snow and become truly breathtaking. Check out these hikes to get the true Alberta trail experience.
Tunnel Mountain
Tunnel Mountain Trail is one of the seminal trails in Banff. The climb itself is moderate, but well traveled. The panoramic views at the top truly make it a must for all hikers. At the peak, you’re treated with views of the Bow Valley and its marshes alongside the towering Mt Rundle.
Johnston Canyon
Johnston Canyon is a wonderful option for anyone who loves a good waterfall. In winter, the trail becomes a stunning wonderland of frozen cascades and creeks. Just a short 2.7 kilometers, the trail can be completed by hikers with a moderate amount of experience. It requires ice cleats as you traverse through the canyon, first to the Lower Falls and then toward the impressive Upper Falls. Here you’ll find a cathedral of ice walls and incredible views overtop the gorge below.
Rawson Lake
Rawson Lake is another epic trail that starts off deceptively easy. The mile is flat, though requires snowshoes. It passes along the shoreline of Upper Kananaskis Lake for some beautiful views. From there, you’ll reach Sarrail Waterfall and treacherous terrain. The next portion of the trail is a steep 300-meter climb. But you’re rewarded at the end with breathtaking views of Mount Sarrail. Be sure not to venture further, as you’re entering avalanche country.
