Under $100: Charlottesville, Virginia

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia is a tiny college town that has grown into its own identity besides serving as home to University of Virginia. Charlottesville’s serene mountain setting and kind-hearted people make it an enjoyable daytrip from nearby cities like Washington, D.C. or Richmond.

Start off the day at a Charlottesville institution: Bodo’s Bagel Bakery where a made-from-scratch bagel costs 85 cents.

Once you’re satiated, there are basically two major themes in Charlottesville: history and wine. For a taster of the former, book a visit to Monticello, the home of former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Day pass tickets cost $29. A free alternative would involve strolling the grounds of the university, also founded and built by Jefferson. Take a student-led tour to learn more about the history of the esteemed college.

The afternoon can be spent at one of the area’s wineries, like Jefferson Vineyards or Blenheim Vineyards, with a sunset over the mountains to boot.

If you’re not much of a wine drinker, visit Carter Mountain Orchard instead where you can pick apples and taste homemade products like jams, jellies, apple butter and the famous apple cider donut.

End your day with dinner along the historic downtown mall, a pedestrian-only walkway where restaurants are abundant in variety and you may even catch a live outdoor musical performance.
