Start your day in Cumberland, Maryland, with breakfast at Cafe Mark. The intimate eatery has an extensive tea menu, from masala chai to original blends. Breakfast options include omelets, breakfast sandwiches (like the breakfast Reuben, with fried eggs, corned beef, cheese and hash browns on grilled sourdough), pancakes, French toast and á la carte favorites. Breakfast starts at less than $7.
Walk off your breakfast with a visit to the C&O Canal National Historical Park. The canal operated for a century and was a vital part of the economies of towns along the Potomac River, transporting coal, lumber and other products.
Nearby, check out George Washington’s Headquarters at the park across the street. George Washington used the log cabin there as a military command post in 1794, when he visited Cumberland in relation to the Whiskey Rebellion, making him the only U.S. president to directly lead troops in the field.
Grab lunch at City Lights American Grill & Bar. The longstanding local favorite serves steakhouse classics with outside dining in historic downtown Cumberland. The lighter lunch menu includes wraps, salads and sandwiches, with many options less than $10.
Next, the Allegany Museum displays the region’s culture and history, with artifacts including fossilized mammals dating back 700,000 years; a model of Fort Cumberland; and Civil War items from local families.
Enjoy a free tasting at Charis Winery, Allegany County’s first winery. The location in downtown Cumberland makes it an easy walk.
Then, on your way out of town, stop by 1812 Brewery, set on a 190-acre family farm with a taproom situated in the historic brick and wood barn built in 1812.
