Destinations / North America

Start your day with breakfast at Burke’s Bakery. The Danville institution offers fresh donuts that have caught the eye of national food reviewers, including The New York Times.

Then, it’s off to explore some of Danville’s history at the McDowell House Museum, Apothecary & Garden. The National Historic Landmark is open to guided tours. The house was home to a pioneering surgeon who performed complex procedures before the days of anesthesia and antibiotics.

Do a little shopping and pick up some gifts at Elmwood Inn Fine Teas, where the tea room beckons for a quick cup.

For lunch, visit Grace Cafe, where your dollars go to a good cause. The cafe is a pay-what-you-can eatery, with all proceeds benefiting initiatives to end hunger in the community.

In the afternoon, visit and tour Wilderness Trail Distillery. Ranked a top craft distillery in the nation, you can learn all about the spirit-making process and enjoy a tasting.

Then, visit the Great American Dollhouse Museum to see miniature replicas of structures both real and imagined while learning a bit about the local history.

Dinner can be had at The Bluebird. The favorite restaurant focuses on all things local and you’ll spot menu items sourced from just miles away. Some of the most popular items on the menu include the Bluebird Pear Salad, Somerset Wrap and BBQ Burger.

After dinner, catch a show at Pioneer Playhouse. The oldest outdoor theater in the state, it produces off-Broadway and locally written shows, with performances taking place every night during the summer, Tuesday through Saturday.

Avoid the Crowds with a Second-City Honeymoon

Second-city travel is one of the hottest trends of 2020. It involves avoiding the over-crowded, over-touristed cities that are historically top travel destinations and visiting nearby, lesser-known destinations instead. Travelers are learning that, while well-known destinations are popular for a reason, less-popular cities also have plenty to offer with fewer crowds and cheaper costs.

Enjoy the Open Road on Your Terms

For most of us, time in the car is “me time.” You can listen to that podcast you’re captivated by, blast that pop song and sing along at the top of your lungs or listen to the next chapter in that biography e-book you’re almost finished. A road trip only amplifies those opportunities. So, next time you’re traveling by road, take the wheel and take control. Opt for a rental car on your next vacation, rather than a rideshare, taxi or public transportation, and enjoy the open road on your own terms.
