Under $100 / North America

Start your explorations of Gettysburg with breakfast, but not just any breakfast. Gettysburg has many delightful bed and breakfasts worth a stay. If you book a stay at Baladerry Inn, you not only get a comfy, spacious guestroom in a historic home once a Civil War hospital, but you also dine on a scrumptious, hearty breakfast each morning, and it’s all included in your room rate.

After you’re fueled up for the morning, head to the battlefield and beat the afternoon crowds if you can. The free, historic attraction is huge, so do a little research before your visit to find the spots you most want to see. Some of the top, can’t-miss sites? Devil’s Den, a horrific terrain for a battle and the rumored most-haunted spot in town, and Gettysburg National Cemetery.

Driving around the battlefield can easily take all morning, but once you’ve seen the best sites, drive a bit further out of town to Thirsty Farmer Brew Works. Try a flight of the locally produced beers and ciders from your seat on the covered deck, where you can watch the hops growing just a few yards away. The brewery’s lunch menu features casual, build-your-own eats, where you’re invited to pile sandwiches, quesadillas, flatbreads and wraps high with meats, veggies, cheeses, toppings and specialty spreads, all for less than $10.

After lunch, head back into town to see some more historic sites. Eisenhower National Historic Site was the president’s weekend retreat and his home after his stint in the White House. The Shriver House Museum and Jennie Wade House are both historic homes that give you a glimpse of what life was like during the Battle of Gettysburg (and the latter was the site of the only civilian casualty during the battle).

Don’t miss your chance to stroll the streets of downtown Gettysburg and stop into some of the many boutique shops. You’ll find stores dedicated to handcrafted home decor, Christmas ornaments, Civil War paraphernalia and everything in between.

After you’ve worked up an appetite again, grab dinner at Garryowen Irish Pub for authentic Irish bites and live music. Get your Irish fare fix with Scotch eggs, bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie, Guinness beef stew and more. You can easily enjoy a great dinner out for less than $25.

Don’t forget dessert. Cannonball Malt Shop, just steps away, serves a mean banana split.

What to Do During a Trip to Morro Bay, California

No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.
