Under $100: Kosice, Slovakia

Slovakia’s second-largest city is a nice place to spend a day, and you can do so on a budget, too.

Start off with breakfast at Republika Východu, a local joint that prides itself on serving eastern Slovakian specialties ($8). Suitably fortified, take a walk around the center of town and visit St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral, Michal’s Chapel and Urban’s Tower, as well as marveling at some of the impressive palaces dotted along Hlavna Ulica, or main street.

For lunch, try Med Malina and its traditional Slovak dishes, such as grilled meats with local cheeses and stewed cabbage ($15). It’s a cozy spot with an extensive menu that should have something to satisfy all but the fussiest of eaters.

In the afternoon, visit the singing fountains in front of the magnificent State Theatre and then take a look around the East Slovak Museum. Head back to your accommodation to freshen up and then hit the town at Golem Brewery, popular among the 16,000 students that call Kosice home, before eating some dinner at Camelot Medieval Restaurant ($20), a medieval-themed place that serves huge plates of steak and chips.

Afterwards, continue the party at Little Havana Caffe Bar or Garibaldi’s cocktail bar for something a little more sophisticated ($4 per drink).
