If you end up in Russia’s capital city, here’s how to spend the day sightseeing and exploring for less than $100.
The Metro
Doge down into Moscow’s metro system, considered one of the most beautiful in the world, for the price of a train ticket. Visit one of the 44 subterranean stations considered cultural heritage sites and soak in the different architectural styles of each, from Art Deco to Baroque.
Red Square
The Red Square looks like the setting of a Russian fairytale, with cobblestone streets leading from the powerhouse Kremlin to the picturesque Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Some of the most significant speeches, military parades and demonstrations in Russian history took place in this square, and the outdoor space is open for visitors to wander and soak in the history.
Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory
The conservatory, one of the finest higher music education institutions in Russia, routinely puts on free concerts to encourage appreciation for fine arts. The concert venue hosts world-class musicians and composers and is a haven for classical music lovers. Check the online schedule in advance to find out which events are free.
Walk the GUM
This one could get you over the $100 mark quickly if you’re not careful. The State Department Store, GUM, is Russia’s most famous shopping mall. The massive, glorious mall is an architectural beauty itself and the rows of exclusive boutiques are just as eye-catching.
Get a Drink at the Metropole Hotel
The iconic Metropole Hotel, once a Bolshevik hub under Lenin, now serves craft cocktails from the opulent lobby bar. Each of its signature cocktails are printed on playing cards in the center of each table — take your time looking through all the artfully photographed drinks before you pick the best one.
