Under $100 / Europe

The southern city of Nimes might be small, but its fascinating history makes it a great place to spend a few days.

Get up early and grab some breakfast down at Les Halles, the central market open from 7 a.m. Wander the stands and pick out what you want or head straight to the boulangerie counter for a classic croissant washed down with a strong coffee ($5).

After you’ve marveled at the local produce on offer, walk off your breakfast on a stroll up to the Magne Tower (entrance $4). This fortification is the last piece of the ancient Augustan defenses that protected the city since 15 BC, and you can get great views from the top. Get up there early to avoid the heat of the day if you’re visiting in summer, and then enjoy the walk back into town through the Jardin de la Fontaine.

Next up visit the Maison Carrée, a Roman temple and archaeological site that now houses a cinema screening a short film about the history of Nimes. It’s interesting enough, but if you’d rather save the $7 entrance fee you can just admire the architecture from outside.

For lunch, go to Le Patio Littré and get a table in the charming courtyard. The food is great, and with set menus at $20 per person, you can’t go wrong. Plus you can share a bottle of wine for around $18.

After lunch, visit the Roman arena. It’s been lovingly restored in recent years and retains its imposing beauty. Entrance costs $10 but you can get a combined ticket for $14 for all three attractions mentioned here.

For dinner, try the Italian specialties at La Piazzeta ($25). It’s a lively place, and will set you up perfectly for a few drinks at Café Latin, outside the Maison Carrée (beers $4).
