Start your day in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. This town in The Poconos is known for its history. Enjoy breakfast at Through the Looking Glass in historic downtown. The affordable breakfast menu offers an array of pancakes and egg dishes.

From there, head to the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center, where you’ll learn about the area’s coal mining history and the town’s namesake.

Heading out of Jim Thorpe, you can learn more about the region’s mining roots, at the No. 9 Mine and Museum, set in an anthracite coal mine that dates to the 1800s.

Next in your journey through the Poconos, you can travel into Stroudsburg, called the Heart of the Poconos. Enjoy lunch at The Cure Cafe, where the menu consists of healthy salads, sandwiches and wraps. Specialties include the smoked salmon ALT, made with salmon, avocado, lettuce and tomato, and the veggie hash.

Window shop your way through Stroudsburg’s downtown, and maybe stop in The Renegade Winery, right off Main Street, for a brief tasting.

In late afternoon, head on to Milford. Make a stop at the Grey Towers National Historic Site for a guided tour of the mansion and grounds, once home to the first director of the United States Forest Service and a governor of Pennsylvania.

Then, go on to The Columns Museum, a neoclassical mansion that houses an array of exhibits, but most notably The Lincoln Flag, said to have been folded and used as a pillow for Abraham Lincoln following his assassination, before he was moved from Ford Theatre.

Grab dinner and end your day at Apple Valley Restaurant, a longstanding community favorite serving a wide array of salads, burgers and sandwiches, as well as award-winning barbecue.

One of the biggest challenges travelers visiting foreign countries face is the language barrier. If you've tried any of the early translation apps, especially the free ones, then you know it is all too easy to try asking where the bathroom is and end up asking where chickens live.
