Start the morning visiting some historical sites in Springfield, Illinois. Springfield is where Abraham Lincoln’s final resting place is located. Visitors to Lincoln’s tomb can learn more about him and his life. Along with his tomb, there is an Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum that allows visitors to view precious artifacts from his life, photos and learn more about what he did for America.

 

Grab breakfast at Charlie Parker’s Diner. This diner is locally owned and has been in the same location since 1991. It’s inexpensive; the food will not cost any more than $12 for a good meal.

 

In the afternoon, visit the African American History Museum, dedicated to celebrating African American history in central Illinois. The museum features more than 700 oral histories from citizens of Illinois, funded by the Springfield African American history foundation Admission to the museum is free and it has varying hours so check the schedule ahead of time.

 

Arlington’s is a gorgeous restaurant and bar that blends the old with the new; timeless photographs around the restaurant remind patrons of the old factory that used to sit in its place. The menu uses local and fresh ingredients. The bar features 12 beers on tap and handcrafted cocktails. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday and people spend less than $15 per meal on average.
