Something of a hidden gem, the town of Tropea is a must-see if you are in the Calabria region of Italy.
For breakfast, head to Don Ugo Café where you can get traditional Italian pastries and coffee to set you up for a relaxing morning ($7).
Spend the morning on the 2.5 miles of beach, some of the cleanest in Italy. There are spectacular rock formations, coves and turquoise water on white sand, which feels more like the Caribbean than southern Europe.
Try Osteria del Pescatore for lunch, where swordfish and other seafood feature heavily. It’s tucked away down a little lane, but don’t let the challenge of finding it put you off ($20).
In the afternoon, go to Santa Maria dell’Isola, a sixth-century Benedictine monastery that sits on a promontory looking down over the beaches. There are 300 steps to get to the top, but it’s well worth it for the views.
Go for dinner at Al Pinturicchio, a romantic spot in a whitewashed cellar that serves great Calabrian favorites ($30).
If you want to head out on the town, try Al Migliarese cocktail bar. The drinks are amazing and you will have a lovely view over town to boot.
