Sports tourism is continuously popular, and St. Augustine, Florida, and its surrounding region deliver all the competitive thrills a sports-loving traveler can handle this winter.
Florida and golf go hand-in-hand and, March 11–15, THE PLAYERS Championship comes to Ponte Vedra, bringing together nearly 150 of the world’s best golfers.
The same month, the 2nd Annual Florida Man Games is a can’t-miss for anyone who loves a good “Florida Man” story, held on March 1. Teams from around the state go head-to-head in challenges such as the Evading Arrest Obstacle Course, which entails evading “police” and tossing around some reptiles, and The Hurricane Party Prep: Grocery Aisle Brawl challenge, which requires participants to fight it out for necessary hurricane prep supplies.
For something slightly more highbrow, on March 22 St. Augustine Race Week kicks off.
For something fun a little closer in time, head to The Giro d’Italia Ride Like a Pro USA Gran Fondo and Ragazzi Fun Ride, Jan. 18–19. This cycling experience is open to cyclists of all skill levels, with events even for children. If you’d rather run than cycle, make tracks for St. Augustine the same weekend, Jan. 18, for the 45th Annual Matanzas 5K.
