Destinations / Asia

Gwangju is the sixth-largest city in South Korea, known for its distinct character reflected in rich history, colorful cuisine and fierce local pride. A visit to Gwangju can be rewarding in many different aspects.

The town’s dedication to culture is visible everywhere you look, from its charming, mural-riddled Art Street to the ultra-modern Asia Culture Center. The city hosts a biennale, which showcases work by prominent Korean and international artists and designers.

There is an entire street dedicated to the mouthwatering Korean dish of tteokgalbi. It is grilled beef ribs served with rice and many other side dishes. Tteokgalbi Alley is in the southwest part of town, and it features all the best tteokgalbi dishes.

The Damyang Bamboo Forest is only a short bus ride away. The serene bamboo forest stretches for 25 acres and is filled with hiking trails, waterfalls and artisanal shops.
