When someone mentions travel to Portugal, they probably mean visiting Lisbon or Porto. Southwest of Portugal proper, however, is an autonomous Portuguese archipelago filled with great wine, beautiful botanical gardens and a wonderful climate.
Getting to Madeira can be a little bit tricky. Most likely, travelers will need to catch a connecting flight. Europe has many direct flights to the islands, but if you are traveling from the United States, you need to connect somewhere.
Most of the high-end accommodations on the island can be found in Funchal. Funchal is home to many 4- and 5-star hotels, so check them out for a luxurious stay.
When you get to Madeira, make sure to visit Funchal, the capital and home to Madeira Botanical Garden, a tropical garden, the Funchal Cathedral and many more once-in-a-lifetime sights. To sample some excellent local wines, make a stop at Blandy’s Wine Lodge.
While on Madeira, stop at the Porto Moniz natural swimming pools. The pools are filled with seawater, which constantly crashes over a rocky barrier. It should not be missed.
There are plenty of tour companies all over Madeira willing to give visitors truly unique views of the island. Tours range from wildlife tours to rover-rides reaching the remote spaces of the island. Don’t forgo the chance to connect with the unique nature of this remote island.
