Sullivan’s Island is a charming island town located in Charleston County, South Carolina. Its old-fashioned, low-key vibe is perfect for a daytrip during a visit to Charleston, South Carolina. Located at the entrance of Charleston Harbor, the 3.3-mile island offers visitors beach access, watersports, historical attractions, shops and restaurants.
Fort Moultrie was constructed during the Revolutionary War and visitors may still visit the restored building. Edgar Allan Poe was stationed here from November 1827 through December 1828 and he used the setting for his short story “The Gold Bug.” For an additional experience of the author, visit Poe’s Tavern. The gastropub boasts a full food and drink menu alongside Edgar Allen Poe-themed décor.
There are several popular restaurants to choose from on Sullivan’s Island. A perennial favorite, The Obstinate Daughter offers an eclectic Southern menu with French, Italian and Spanish influences. Sullivan’s Fish Camp is a great spot for inventive and classic seafood dishes. For quick bites and refreshing drinks, check out The Co-Op’s Sullivan’s Island outpost. Enjoy a frosé or grab one to go to enjoy on the beach.
The beach offers options for those interested in relaxing or taking part in outdoor activities. The area offers kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, kite boarding and fishing opportunities. Visit the Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse at the United States Coast Guard Historic District. While the lighthouse itself is closed to the public, visitors may wander the grounds and read the markers detailing its history.
