Visiting the Camargue, France

The incredible Camargue region of southern France encompasses the area where the Petit Rhône and the Grand Rhône meet the Mediterranean. It’s a beautiful place full of salt flats, marshlands and farms.

There are several nice towns you can use as a base for exploring the Camargue, including Arles. This pretty little place is famous for its Roman architecture, and the fact Vincent Van Gogh spent a considerable amount of time working here.

Natural attractions include the Camargue National Park, a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve, where you can see hundreds of thousands of migrating birds in spring and autumn. You can also spot flamingos and the special white horses that are an icon of the region. While many used to live wild, most are now owned by local cowboys or available for horseback riding trips.

The easiest way to get to the Camargue is from Marseille or Montpellier, both of which have international airports. The area makes a great stop on a Mediterranean road trip, and there is plenty to see and do.

A Mediterranean climate makes the Camargue good to visit from April to October, so there are plenty of opportunities to make a trip in good weather.
