Homestay provider Vrbo predicts some of the top travel trends for 2020.
According to the brand, more travelers are looking to book same-city stays. Rather than enjoying a staycation within their own city, in which travelers stay at their own home, they’re choosing to book a hotel or home rental in their home city, and then explore things to do in their own backyards. This trend is particularly popular in Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta.
Travelers are also booking “cele-cations,” or vacations to celebrate with a group, whether that celebration be a wedding, birthday or anniversary. Cele-cations are sometimes combined with same-city stays, especially when travelers want to host larger groups of people than they could in their own home. In these cases, they might book a large homestay property or hotel suite.
Portugal continues to rise in popularity as a destination for American travelers. Lisbon is popular, as is Vila Nova de Gaia, a beach destination. Other popular destinations on Vrbo’s list of top five seaside spots for 2020 include Catania, Italy, and Chania, Greece.
The fastest-growing destinations for 2020 bookings, though, according to Vrbo, are Terlingua, Texas; Bella Vista, Arkansas; Westport, Washington; Cherry Log, Georgia; and Edisto Island, South Carolina.
“This is the third year in a row travelers’ desire to be outdoors has filled the up-and-coming destinations list,” said Melanie Fish, travel expert, Vrbo. “Clearly people want the comforts of a home away from home while soaking in scenery.”
Travelers also continue to look for more and more unique accommodations, such as barns, castles, boats and treehouses.
