Watch Vice’s Chef’s Night Out Before Your Trip

Sometimes the best part of a vacation is psyching yourself up for it in advance. This can mean highlighting Rick Steves’ guidebooks, spending hours on Google reading through articles for tips on what to do, or talking to friends and family who journeyed to the same destination. For your next getaway, add this one to the pre-trip research list: Chef’s Night Out.

You can find the Munchies mini series on Vice’s network on YouTube, and trust me when I say it’s worth the binge-watch. The tagline “no one parties like a chef” is your first clue at how hilarious and awesome this series can be. A film crew selects a well-known chef from a specific city around the world and then tags along with their ragtag group of friends as they eat and drink their way around local haunts. It’s raw and real, and you get to check out firsthand chef-approved hot spots in each destination. Think: Chef’s Table where the chefs get drunk.

The show always starts with an interview of the chosen chef to describe their restaurant concept and showcase a few signature dishes. Then a few buddies join up and they hop around to three or four eateries and cocktail bars, highlighting the best items at each. Eventually they stumble their way back into the chef’s kitchen to cook late-night munchie food and party into the night.

With this format, you get to see the best of both worlds: Michelin-starred and renowned restaurants contrasted with watering holes and local secret spots. Running around 23 minutes per episode, it’s an easy and entertaining way to research where you should eat and drink in your next destination.
