Eating on a long-haul flight is completely unavoidable, especially if meals are included as part of the flight experience. However, with an increasing number of airlines lowering fares and removing in-flight meals, passengers are forced to bring their own grub on board. Whether food is included or is not included on your next flight, consider the following recommendations when it comes to dining in the sky.
Airplane food has the reputation of being quite bland, so use the provided salt and pepper packets wisely to spice up the meal contents. Keep the salt limited; however, as it can contribute to discomfort and bloat, especially in the high skies. Other ways to limit bloat include avoiding fiber-heavy foods like vegetables and high-fiber meal bars widely available in airports.
Carb-heavy and baked goods can also leave travelers feeling uncomfortable and lethargic. Save the sweets for after the flight and consider the treat a reward for enduring the lengthy flight.
To simultaneously fill up and stay hydrated, opt for fruit, especially those more water dense like melons. Skipping the pre-flight glass of wine is a wise choice, as is forgoing multiple cups of dehydrating coffee. Take extra bottles of water on board to avoid relying on the cabin crew to roll through on a sporadic basis.
At the end of the day, use your best judgment when it comes to consumption on board. You know your digestive system and what it can handle better than the flight attendants do. If you have a sensitive stomach, make sure to board with the necessary remedies, such as antacids or other medicinal solutions.
