A standard travel outfit should be as comfortable as possible, but deciding what to wear to the airport should go beyond comfort and also focus on utility and security. Here’s a list of what to avoid when planning your next travel ensemble.
Long dresses or skirts, or super baggy pants. When passing through security with long, flowy coverage below the waist, you may be setting yourself up to be pulled aside for a pat-down. Don’t draw attention to yourself with baggy clothes. Instead, wear a pair of comfortable but not-too-loose pants.
Pants with pockets. Shorts or pants with pockets can be great travel apparel, especially for hikers and campers who need to store items in easy-to-access places. But such clothing can be detrimental in the security line as you’re apt to forget a set of keys or coins tucked away in the hidden pockets.
Hair clips. Barrettes and bobby pins can set off metal detectors, so if you want a stylish way to wear your hair, pack them in your carry-on and don them after passing through security.
Shoes with complicated laces. Slip-on/slip-off shoes are your best bet for passing through security with ease, so if your shoes do have laces, make sure you can slide them off easily, even if you have to step aside to re-tie them after making it through the line.
