Depending on where you plan to travel, you may need to brush up on appropriate wardrobe options as customs can vary based on geography and religion. You’ll also want to make sure you’ve packed everything you may need for varying weather patterns. What you probably don’t want to pack, however, are the items below, which can be offensive, unnecessary and just take up valuable room in your luggage.
Flip Flops
In the name of common decency (and fashion), leave the rubber thongs at home, unless you plan to spend every waking moment on a beach. Even then, purchase a cheap pair at the nearest surf shop when you arrive. With little comfort and foot protection, flip flops should be left behind.
Anything Too Revealing
When frequenting your local watering hole at home, anything goes, but in countries outside the United States, it’s typically advisable to cover up as comfortably as possible. If you’re visiting the south of Spain in August, tank tops and shorts are acceptable ways to beat the heat; just remember to bring a scarf or shawl when visiting churches.
Serious Athletic Gear
Stretchy pants, t-shirts and sneakers can be great in-transit clothes to keep you comfy on long flights, but when strolling around a city, it’s best to leave these items at your hotel as they will likely make you stand out as a visitor, thus making you a target for petty thieves.
Graphic Tees
Arguments for these garments can vary depending on the content displayed on the t-shirt, so if it’s anything that is or might be offensive in another country, play it safe and leave it behind.
