Dreaming of a far-flung adventure, but not exactly sure where you’d like to end up? Consider Sarawak, on the Malaysian island of Borneo. Also called the “Land of the Hornbills,” this destination is ideal for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers.
During a trip, there are a few things you’ll absolutely want to add to your itinerary.
First, visit the destination’s multiple national parks. Gunung Mulu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to the world’s largest cave chamber and longest cave passage — a perfect exploration for spelunkers. There’s also Bako National Park, the oldest in Sarawak and home to an incredible amount of biodiversity, including more than 150 species of birds. Then, visit Niah National Park, where caves have attracted humans for at least 65,000 years.
While wildlife watching is obviously on tap at all three of these national parks, you’ll also want to visit Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, an orangutan rehabilitation sanctuary.
“Sarawak is not just a place to visit — it’s a place to feel alive,” said Sharzede Datu Haji Salleh Askor, CEO, Sarawak Tourism Board. “It offers the kind of off-the-beaten-path adventure that today’s traveler is craving — authentic, raw and unforgettable.”
