What to Do if Your Airbnb Doesn’t Live Up to Your Expectations

Tips / Travel

You’ve been planning your trip for a while now. You’ve picked the perfect Airbnb. You arrive and … it’s absolutely not what you expected. So, what do you do?

Identify the Problem
What actually is the issue with your Airbnb? Is it dirty? Does it look slightly different from the photos? Begin making a list of the actual issues and be specific as possible.

Is This Something Your Host Can Fix?
If the problems are relatively small — say, the lawn is overgrown or the house doesn’t look as nice as it did in the photos — you may choose to just move forward with the rental as is, with no complaint. After all, your host can’t really do anything immediately about the house looking a little shabbier than it did when they photographed it the first time, and you may not want someone coming over to mow the lawn during your stay.

However, if it’s something the host can or should fix, such as the last guest leaving the trash cans overflowing or the house overall dirty, contact your host and see if they can clean the property while you’re out for the day.

Should You Contact Airbnb?
If, though, the issue is larger, you may need to contact Airbnb. Airbnb’s policy is to provide guests with different, similar accommodations in the area (or a refund, if that’s not possible), if the property you booked does not meet expectations to a significant degree. However, this is typically limited to instances wherein the host actually lied on the listing. Maybe they said they had a pool, but they don’t.

In these cases, get in touch with Airbnb and discuss your options.
